Different Beaks Live in Harmony

Some days bring a flush of warmth and oozing sympathy among us. The dog will just snuffle and lower its head with resignation when the snooty cat walks by. Birds will fight for dominion and fly in concert with the target. The fights will stop in families, between lovers, among kids, adults, pets; hunters and hunted. Long forgotten are the old grudges and “supposed to behave” rigors replaced by accepting of the great, wonderful moment of “NOW”. Here, peace walks in on high stepping thumps! How’s that for an oxymoron. Diversity is beautiful, let’s live with it and run towards peace. Here are Julio the cormorant with Maya the Great Egret’s Mom:

Maya has thrown up her wings and is advising everyone to listen to Bird on a Wire written by fantastic poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen and also sung by Ester Ofarim and Joe Cocker! It’s the Beginning of a New Era…

…in our nation and what an exciting day it has been! The significance of this auspicious event (and its implications for everyone) has released trillions of colorful balloons in my heart. President Obama’s inaugural speech will surely instill new vigor in our lives and help us thrive once more.

In the wildlife world, things are happening at the rookeries here in Southwest Florida. Last week I showed photos of some gorgeous Great Blue herons getting acquainted. Two weeks later, they were among the busy birds building nests.

The juvenile in the bottom right-hand corner above has grown even more. I was fortunate to witness her/him testing its wings. I’d love to see the parent teaching little juvie. Perhaps next time!

The Great Egrets were furiously courting too. If any of you more mature people, like myself, need a revisit to the excitement of first love or a reaffirmation of true love, then the beauty of these magnificent birds will take you there.
